Belfast Giants maintained a four-point advantage over Sheffield Steelers in the Elite League on Saturday night.
The second-placed Giants won 4-2 at fourth-placed Coventry Blaze, while third-placed Steelers edged out rock bottom Hull Stingrays 4-3, who remain three points adrift at the bottom of the table.
The Giants - last year's league winners who lost out narrowly to Nottingham in retaining the trophy this year - went into the game knowing that nothing but a win would do if they wanted to get their hands on the Erhardt Conference title.
Goals from Matt Towe, Kevin Saurette and Noah Clarke and a powerplay goal from Chad Langlais secured the vital victory and all the Giants now need to do is get a regulation win at Sheffield on Sunday.
In other action, the Edinburgh Capitals won 3-2 at the Dundee Stars. The defeat was a double blow for the hosts, as it ended their chances of winning the Gardiner Conference and also resulted in them not making the end of season play-offs.
With Dundee having been defeated, Braehead Clan knew that they were the Conference winners before their game at Fife Flyers ended and the visiting fans started their celebrations, despite eventually losing 4-1 in the Scottish derby.
