Didier Cuche got a busy weekend off to a flying start with victory in a World Cup Super-G in front of his home crowd in Crans-Montana.

The Swiss, who is retiring at the end of the season, picked up his fourth win of the season and his sixth in Super-G but only his second on home snow in a 16-year career.

Canadian Jan Hudec looked have the race sewn up when taking advantage of an early bib number, but Cuche charged down the course in one minute and 3.11 seconds to defeat Hudec by 0.16 secs, with veteran Benny Raich in third.

"It was not easy as everybody kept asking me what I felt about my last home races," he said. "It is an emotional moment but I tried to keep emotion on one side and my job on the other.

"I was not too sure what to expect as I was not on the right line at the top but my lower part was just the way I had planned it.

"Hearing the national anthem, sung by a lot of the crowd, is something else. I had to close my eyes to hold back the tears."

The skiers will race in a second Super-G on Saturday when Cuche will look to take the lead in the standings, now sitting 38 points behind leader Aksel Lund Svindal who was eighth on Friday.

Sunday will also see the venue host a giant slalom when Austrian Marcel Hirscher will try to overhaul the injured Ivica Kostelic at the top of the overall standings.

Meanwhile, American Bode Miller was ruled out of this weekend's action after undergoing exploratory keyhole surgery on the knee he injured two weeks ago.
