Michael van Gerwen: Claimed a sixth PDC ProTour title of the year in Crawley.
Michael van Gerwen continued his fine run of form by a 6-4 comeback win over Ian White in the final of Sunday's Players Championship in Crawley.
The Dutch star added a sixth PDC ProTour title of the year to the PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix crown he claimed last month with a gutsy victory from a perilous position at 4-0 down.
After defeating Peter Hudson, Mark Jones and Peter Wright in his first three games at the K2 Centre, van Gerwen saw off Colin Lloyd 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.
There, he swept past Dave Chisnall with a 6-1 triumph before performing a superb comeback to deny White his maiden professional title.
White had started the final superbly, hitting tops to break in the opening leg and the same bed to double his lead with a 79 finish.
Two 180s in a 14-darter saw him race to a 4-0 lead but a double 10 got van Gerwen off the mark and then legs of 14 and 15 darts saw him claw back to 4-3.
Another double 10 brought dramatic parity before a confident 13-darter kept him en route for a remarkable victory, one sealed on double eight.
"It's amazing for me and it's probably the most difficult ProTour event I've won," said van Gerwen. "I didn't play that well at the beginning of the game and I struggled a bit but it was a very tough game for me.
"I'm very happy to get my sixth win of the year, and I was confident that I could make a comeback like that. This will give me even more confidence for the Grand Slam of Darts.
White's defeat saw him lose out in a sixth final on the PDC ProTour, but the Stoke ace continues his rise towards winning a place in the world's top 32 after picking up £3,000 as runner-up.
His run to the final included a superb 6-4 defeat of Saturday's champion Simon Whitlock in the semi-finals as well as wins over Connie Finnan, Wayne Jones, John Henderson and Brendan Dolan.
The Crawley Players Championships was the penultimate weekend of PDC ProTour action this year, with a final double-header to be held at the Barnsley Metrodome on 24/25 November, followed by the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship PDPA Qualifier on 26 November.
