Taylor: still favourite despite inconsistent form

Phil Taylor is unsurprisingly the bookies' favourite to continue his domination of the Grand Slam of Darts, which gets under way on Saturday.

The Power has won the title on four of the five occasions it has been played for and heads to Wolverhampton Civic Hall as Sky Bet's 13/8 favourite, despite some recent inconsistent form.

The 52-year-old 13-time world champion has struggled for form ever since winning a fifth consecutive World Matchplay title.

He crashed out of the European Championships at the quarter-final stage when losing to Brendan Dolan and also suffered a shock second round exit to Scotland's Robert Thornton in the World Grand Prix in Dublin.

If Taylor is to secure a fifth Grand Slam title he must overcome fancied duo Simon Whitlock (10/1) and Michael van Gerwen (12/1) in the top half of the draw.

Taylor (1/7) opens his account against Co Stompe (9/2) in his first match in the round robin format which sees players from the PDC and BDO come face-to-face.

Sky Bet's darts trader Craig Ibbotson said: "Taylor is a strong favourite yet again for Grand Slam glory, however the field are getting closer and recent World Grand Prix champion Michael van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock are big dangers in the champions' half of the draw."

Looking in the bottom half there are huge question marks over the form of Gary Anderson, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld which could open the door for Wes Newton who is popular with punters at 14/1.

Others to keep an eye on are Tony O'Shea (50/1) and Wayne Jones (100/1) look tasty outsiders, who both have enjoyed success on the Wolverhampton stage.

The BDO boys have had a great deal of success since the event began five years ago and Scott Waites, who is the only man to break Taylor's stranglehold on the tournament, is a 33/1 shot. Sky Bet go 9/1 that a BDO player wins the tournament.

All the crowd will be hoping to see a perfect nine dart finish and the online bookmaker offer 11/8 that they get their wish over the nine days.
