Felix Hernandez allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 10 in a fabulous opening start as Seattle beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 in Opening Day for most Major League teams.

In seven innings of work, Hernandez overmatched Jered Weaver who allowed four runs in six innings for the Angels.Seth Smith went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Mariners while the Angels got a solo home run from Mike Trout.

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Rollins was making his Dodgers' debut, while former Dodgers Matt Kemp debuted for San Diego and went 2-for-4 and drove in all three runs for the Padres. Reigning National League MVP and Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw gave up three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.

Bartolo Colon allowed just one run in six innings and the New York Mets beat the defending East Division champions Washington Nationals 3-1.

Colon allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts as he beat Washington starter Max Scherzer, who debuted for Washington and struck out eight batters in 7 2/3 innings.

Clay Buchholz tossed seven innings, struck out nine batters and combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout, and the Boston Red Sox hit five home runs to batter the Philadelphia Phillies 8-0.

David Price retired the first 13 batters he faced and fell one out shy of a complete-game five hitter, getting home run support from J.D. Martinez and Alex Avila in pacing the Detroit Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Drew Hutchison, at 24 Toronto's youngest opening day starter, allowed just one run in six innings to push the Blue Jays past the New York Yankees 6-1.

Former Yankee catcher Russell Martin had a two-run single and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion slugged a two-run home run for Toronto. Alex Rodriguez, who missed last year due to his 162-game suspension for PED usage, finished 1-for-2.

Baltimore Orioles starter Chris Tillman took a shutout into the seventh inning and Baltimore got three home runs on the way to a 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Corey Dickerson and Nolan Arenado hit their first home runs of the season and Kyle Kendrick threw seven shutout innings as the Colorado Rockies cruised to a 10-0 Opening Day victory over Milwaukee. Arenado finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Dickerson also added four RBIs in the rout.

Yordano Ventura limited the White Sox to one run in six-plus innings before leaving with a cramping right thumb as the Kansas City Royals hammered Chicago 10-1.

The Royals' offence included a three-run home run by Alex Rios, who went 3-for-4 in his Kansas City debut, while Alex Gordon drove in two runs as well.           

Dallas Keuchel worked seven shutout innings and a revamped bullpen preserved his effort in the Houston Astros' 2-0 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Todd Frazier's tiebreaking, three-run home run in the eighth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Reds starter Johnny Cueto allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings and struck out 10, but was denied the victory when Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutcheon hit a two-run, game-tying homer in the eighth.

Newly acquired Nick Markakis drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the sixth inning, as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1.

San Francisco left-hander Madison Bumgarner gave up one run in seven innings, and Angel Pagan had three hits and two RBIs, leading the Giants to a 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Giants second baseman Joe Panik had three hits and scored two runs, and shortstop Brandon Crawford had two hits and drove in two runs, helping the Giants take a 5-1 lead in the fifth before holding on for the win.

Sonny Gray took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and Ben Zobrist belted a two-run home run on his first swing for Oakland, helping the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 8-0.
