MLB: Seattle Mariners beat Los Angeles Angels to maintain post-season hopes

Image: Seattle Mariners kept their post-season hopes alive on Saturday by beating the Angels

The Seattle Mariners ensured they would take the battle for a post-season place down to the final game of the regular season thanks to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field.

Austin Jackson's walk-off RBI in the bottom of the 11th inning sets up a thrilling finale for the Mariners, who can pull level in second place in the American League West with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

Should Seattle beat the Angels again, and Oakland lose to the Texas Rangers, as they did on Saturday, then it will force a play-off between the Mariners and the A's, pencilled in for Monday. The victor in that tussle would take on Detroit or Kansas City on Tuesday in the wild-card game.

Saturday’s MLB results:

Diamondbacks 5 Cardinals 2
Red Sox 10 Yankees 4
White Sox 5 Royals 4
Reds 10 Pirates 6
Indians 0 Rays 2
Tigers 3 Twins 12
Dodgers 6 Rockies 5 (12 Innings)
Brewers 2 Cubs 1
Mets 2 Astros 1
Phillies 2 Braves 4
Giants 3 Padres 1
Mariners 2 Angels 1 (11)
Rangers 5 Athletics 4
Blue Jays 4 Orioles 2
Nationals 5 Marlins 1

Texas gave Oakland their headache by earning a 5-4 win in their clash in Arlington, aided by home runs from Jake Smolinski and Robinson Chirinos.

First place in the American League Central remains up for grabs after the front-running Detroit Tigers were humbled 12-3 at home by the Minnesota Twins.

Second-placed Kansas City could not take advantage and remained a game back after tripping up 5-4 against the Chicago White Sox, for whom Jose Abreu hit his 36th home run of the season.

Left waiting

The St Louis Cardinals also were left waiting to clinch the National League Central title after losing 5-2 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who benefited from a pair of home runs struck by Mark Trumbo.

Pittsburgh would have held a share of top spot, had they not fallen to a 10-6 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds. Ramon Santiago hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to emphatically settle the issue.

Elsewhere, NL West champions the Los Angeles Dodgers racked up a fourth straight win, taking 12 innings to fend off the Colorado Rockies 6-5.

AL East winners the Baltimore Orioles lost 4-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays, NL East champions the Washington Nationals were 5-1 winners over the Miami Marlins, and Derek Jeter could not prevent the New York Yankees falling 10-4 to the Boston Red Sox. Jeter plays his final Major League match on Sunday at Fenway Park, providing a minor hamstring problem does not keep him sidelined.

Other games saw the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 and the New York Mets post a 2-1 win against the Houston Astros courtesy of Lucas Duda's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

The Tampa Bay Rays overcome the Cleveland Indians 2-0, the Atlanta Braves see off the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 with home runs from brothers Justin and BJ Upton, and the Milwaukee Brewers earn a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
