A four-run third inning helped the Boston Red Sox condemn fierce rivals the New York Yankees to a 9-4 defeat.

Daniel Nava's three-run homer coupled with a four-hit night from Xander Bogaerts, who also cleared the wall, put the Red Sox in control and the Yankees could not find a way back.

The Philadelphia Phillies stopped the Atlanta Braves getting on the scoresheet for the second night running with a 4-0 win.

Kyle Kendrick gave up just three hits over seven innings with Carlos Ruiz leading the offensive charge with a homer and an RBI for the Phillies.

Kansas City and Detroit continued their battle for top spot in the American League Central as both teams sealed wins.

The Royals maintained their half a game lead over the Tigers as they claimed a 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers while the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2.

Salvador Perez's RBI single in the eighth handed Kansas City victory with Detroit also leaving it late as J. D. Martinez's three-run homer in the ninth saw them home.

The Houston Astros' interim boss Tom Lawless got off a flying start with an 8-3 win that snapped a six-game winning streak for the Los Angeles Angels.

In vain

The St Louis Cardinals moved two games clear at the top of the National League Central as the Milwaukee Brewers went down to a seventh straight defeat.

The Cards were 6-4 winners over the Pittsburgh Pirates but life does not get any better for the slumping Brewers who went down 7-1 to the Chicago Cubs.

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 35th homer of the year to reach the 100 RBI mark for the season but it was an effort in vain as the Miami Marlins were beaten 8-6 by the New York Mets.

The Chicago White Sox were 6-3 winners over the Minnesota Twins while the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-2.

The Baltimore Orioles extended their lead at the top of the AL North to nine-and-half games with a 5-4 win over the Cincnnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 12-7.

Cory Spangenberg hit a walk-off homer to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks while the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 and the Seattle Mariners beat fellow wild card contenders the Oakland Athletics 6-5.
