The New Year has already seen shock victories, disappointment on both football and rugby pitches and an angry mother.
Scott Waites
Having never previously been beyond the quarter finals, Scott Waites secured his first BDO World Championship title on Sunday.
It was an emphatic performance at the Lakeside, as he trounced Tony O'Shea 7-1 in the final.
Waites stormed to a 5-0 lead, as he even won 10 legs in a row at one point.
O'Shea did then go on to get a set on the board in the next but it was Waites' for the taking on this occasion and he completed the win in style.
Russell Henley
It was a great week and great start to the New Year for rookie Russell Henley as he claimed the Sony Open title in Hawaii.
The 23-year-old was playing in his first PGA Tour event, and he held off the challenge of Tim Clark to win by three shots.
His final total of 24-under-par was also a tournament scoring record.
Owen Farrell
Owen Farrell produced a kicking masterclass as he sent Saracens to an outstanding 37-28 comeback victory over Racing Metro in Nantes.
Saracens are now within touching distance of the Heineken Cup quarter-finals as the England fly-half led the way in a dominant display full of commitment and character.
Farrell finished with 32 points as he secured 11 successful kicks from 11 attempts, including ten penalties.
Bad Week
Exeter
There was disappointment for Exeter this week as they were eliminated from the Heineken Cup after being trounced 46-3 by Clermont Auvergne.
Exeter also have no chance of securing one of the two best runner-up spots after Leinster's bonus-point win over the Scarlets.
Tony O'Shea
Tony O'Shea suffered another fall at the final hurdle when he lost his third BDO World Championship final at the Lakeside.
Scott Waites stormed to a 7-1 victory, and despite playing well during the week, O'Shea was way below his best.
The 51-year-old will be looking at how he can avoid this disappointment, as he continues to reach finals but not secure the silverware.
The GB Lionhearts
In their latest World Series of Boxing appearance, the GB Lionhearts suffered a 4-1 defeat to a strong Ukraine side.
The Ukrainians were always expected to earn the win, in a team which features Olympic champions Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko.
However, although Sean McGoldrick got the Lionhearts off to a solid start by getting a split decision against bantamweight Ivan Ilnytskyy, the Ukrainian side were just too strong on their way to victory.
David Sparkes
If there is ever someone you don't want to cross when angry it is a mother, and this week British Swimming chief David Sparkes felt the full brunt of Tom Daley's mother, Debbie.
She hit back at criticism from Sparkes, who had publicly questioned Daley's decision to front the television show Splash!, claiming it was an unnecessary distraction to his diving training.
However, Tom's mother thought it about time the shoe was put on the other foot, as she responded angrily to the swimming chief's remarks in a 1,600 word letter published by the
Daily Mail.
With all her son has been through in recent years, he showed what hard work and commitment can produce as he finished with a bronze medal in London. His mother had every right to speak out after the recent comments; in fact, many would have not been able to keep quiet for as long as she did.
