The centre was originally going to be built six miles away but the proposed site was found to be contaminated.

It lies on the edge of the 10,000-acre Lee Valley Regional Park and includes two new slalom courses built for 2012.

One is a 300m competition course, the other a 160m intermediate/training course.

A new 10,000sq m lake will feed a system of pumps that will create the white water.

Work on the new courses started in July 2009 and the completed venue was opened in Spring 2011.

The white water centre is the only brand new London 2012 facility that can be used by public ahead of the Games.
