The British duo will finish in second place at worst
British duo Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell are mathematically assured of at least a silver medal in sailing's men's 470 class.
Their performance in the first of two races on Tuesday - they finished third - meant Argentina, the third-placed crew in the overall standings, could no longer catch them.
The GB pair now face a head-to-head fight with the Australian boat of Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page for gold.
The Aussies won both races on Tuesday to stretch their overall lead to four points. GB finished second in the second race.
The class has one more fleet race on Tuesday before the medal race takes place on Thursday and the British pair are refusing to give up on the chase for gold.
"We didn't come here for second place,'' Patience said.
"We're stoked, don't get us wrong. We're really happy boys [to get silver] but there is work to be done.
"There is yet another race and yet another opportunity to upgrade the medals.''
Britain also lie in silver medal position in the women's 470 class.
Yet again it is impressive Antipodean opposition that are proving the stumbling block, with Britain's Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark posting a fifth and second on a day that New Zealand's Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie got a double bullet (race win).
The Kiwis have built a four-point advantage ahead of Wednesday's final two fleet races.
Meanwhile, in the match racing class, Great Britain head into the second day of their quarter-final with Russia level at 1-1.
The Ekaterina Skudina-skippered Russian team won the first match of the best of five series, although Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor drew level in the last race of the day.
