London 2012

Jody Cundy

Jody Cundy is a multiple gold medal winner at World Championships and Paralympics in a stellar career in both cycling and swimming.

Born in Wisbech in 1978 with a deformed right foot which was amputated at the age of three, he was fitted with an artificial leg and first represented his swimming club as a 10-year-old.

His international debut for Great Britain came in 1994 at the World Championships and he made an immediate impact with the gold medal in the 100m butterfly in a time that knocked no less than four seconds off his personal best.

That was the first in a long list of 23 medals over a 10-year swimming career, with 14 of them gold.

The switch to cycling came after his potential was spotted at an open day at Newport Velodrome and again the medals and records came in double-quick time. He broke the British record for the flying 200 while still swimming and also gained a place on the 2006 Paralympic World Cup team which led to a world record in the team sprint.

That triggered a full time switch to the track from the pool and the success continued as he became the fastest solo Paralympian on a bike.

To date he has won nine cycling gold medals at the World Championships and Paralympics, with his two titles in Beijing meaning he is part of a select group of athletes to be Paralympic champions in two different sports.

He was made an MBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list for his services to disability sport and will look to add to his list of achievements over the next 12 months as he builds towards the 2012 Paralympics in London.
