Hilton Botha: Dropped as lead investigator in the Pistorius case

The lead detective in the Oscar Pistorius case has taken to the witness stand after revelations that he himself faces charges of seven counts of attempted murder.

Detective Hilton Botha, who gave evidence against Pistorius on Wednesday, has been dropped from the case and was questioned by magistrate Desmond Nair on Thursday morning after South Africa police revealed Botha is due to appear in court in May with two other police officers after allegedly firing shots while trying to stop a mini-van in an incident in October 2011.

Those charges, which had previously been dropped, have been reinstated by the Director of Public Prosecutions, according to police Brigadier Neville Malila.

Asked to explain the charges, Botha told the court the case was dropped, he was not drunk and was chasing suspects.

The twist came on the third day of Pistorius' bail hearing after the double-amputee Olympian was charged with the premeditated murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The double-amputee Olympian has admitted shooting Steenkamp, but claims he did so thinking she was a burglar or burglars, who were in the bathroom.

Botha prompted laughter in court on Wednesday when he claimed Pistorius was a flight risk and was forced to admit that the prosecution had no evidence to challenge his claim that he killed his girlfriend accidentally, as well as to a number of police blunders in the investigation.

Pistorius said he opened fire in the dark because he was too scared to turn a light on and when he realised his mistake, he broke the door down with a cricket bat and carried her downstairs where she died.

Meanwhile, Nike has confirmed it has suspended its contract with Pistorius.

In a statement, the company said: "We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely."
