Organisers of the 2014 Sochi Games have revealed the route for the longest torch relay in Winter Olympics history, which will traverse a distance of over 40,000 miles, involving a team of more than 14,000 torchbearers.

The Sochi torch relay will cover all 83 Russian regions from Kaliningrad on the Baltic coast to Vladivostok in the nation's far east. It will include trips by foot, train, car, plane and a traditional Russian troika, or sleigh.

"The Sochi 2014 Relay will bring the entire country together, highlighting the diversity and beauty of Russia. "
Dmitry Chernyshenko Quotes of the week

Dmitry Chernyshenko, the Sochi Organising Committee president, has previously announced plans to send the torch into space for the first time, as well as the foot of Lake Baikal, although this was not noted in the statement on Sunday.

Excitement

Chernyshenko said: "The Sochi 2014 Relay will bring the entire country together, highlighting the diversity and beauty of Russia, particularly for the people of Russia themselves.

"The Olympic Torch Relay is one of the most important and magical Olympic occasions. It continues the build-up of excitement ahead of the Games and as well as spreading the Olympic values to the whole country."

The route was revealed one year before the flame is transported to Moscow from Ancient Olympia, where it will be lit.

It is hoped 90 per cent of Russia's population - approximately 130 million - will be within an hour of the relay at some point.
