Northern Irishman digs in to secure medal at Eton Dorney

Britain's Alan Campbell produced a brave row to take bronze in the men's single sculls as New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale landed the gold medal.

Drysdale outlasted long-time rival Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic to seal the gold medal he craved after limping to bronze four years ago.

The Kiwi had headed to Beijing as red-hot favourite to take gold, but went down ill in the run-up to the final and had to settle for third place.

But there was no heartbreak this time around as he pulled into an early lead and dictated the race from the front, eventually winning by half a length.

Campbell showed great desire to take the final medal on offer as he overhauled Sweden's Lassi Karonen in the closing stages to make the podium.

It was rich reward for a sterling performance from the Northern Irishman who finished fifth in the Beijing final.
