Securing and maintaining the Olympic Stadium, the venues and the Olympic Park has cost the taxpayer nearly £4m in the last six months, Sky Sports News can reveal.

A freedom of information request submitted by Sky Sports News has revealed that the cost of safety and security of the Olympic Park has cost £2,980,200 alone in the six months from January to June this year.

The safety and security costs of the stadium come in at an extra £422,487.

In addition the costs of maintenance on the Olympic Stadium come in at £495,300.

The bill to the taxpayer totals £3,897,987.

"Our top priority is the safety and security of everyone on the Park - whether the 650,000 people who have visited the Park to date or the large workforce who are transforming the site into a fantastic destination with world class venues."

These figures do not include the costs of transforming the Olympic Park which is currently taking place.

The Olympic Park, venues and stadium were closed to the public following the Olympic and Paralympic Games in September 2012. From that period until the end of December, the park was managed by the London Organising Committee (Locog), which was privately funded.

Handover

The handover to the London Legacy Development Corporation started in December 2012 and was completed by January this year.

From that point the costs incurred to maintain and secure the stadium, the park and the venues have been bore by LLDC, a public body.

An LLDC spokesperson said: "Our top priority is the safety and security of everyone on the Park - whether the 650,000 people who have visited the Park to date or the large workforce who are transforming the site into a fantastic destination with world class venues.

"With a range of permanent venues as well as multiple construction sites within a 560 hectare site, which is equivalent to the size of Hyde Park, this is a challenge.

"But we pride ourselves on our exemplary health and safety record and make no apologies for putting in place the appropriate measures to achieve this.

"These costs are in line with similar projects where a large area is covered including many different construction sites."
