Nigeria will compete at the Olympics for the first time

Nigeria secured the final place in the men's basketball competition at the London Olympics on Sunday night.

The Africans defeated the Dominican Republic 88-73 in the qualifying tournament in Venezuela to clinch their spot.

The teams went head to head in Caracas for the one remaining berth on offer after losing to Russia and Lithuania, respectively, in Saturday's semi-finals.

Ike Diogu scored a game-high 25 points for the Nigerians to help his country qualify for the Olympic basketball event for the first time.

The tournament gets under way on July 28 with games at the specially-built Basketball Arena in th Olympic Park and the North Greenwich Arena, better known as the O2 Arena.
