Sky Sports sources understand Rio Ferdinand is to be left out of England's Euro 2012 squad by new manager Roy Hodgson.

And Tottenham defender Kyle Walker is also very unlikely to be on the plane to Poland and Ukraine this summer due to the toe injury he suffered on the final day of the Premier League season.

Hodgson admitted when he was handed the reins earlier this month he would speak with both Manchester United centre-back Ferdinand and John Terry before naming his 23-man party, with the squad confirmation scheduled for Wednesday.

Chelsea captain Terry is facing a July court case over accusations he racially abused Ferdinand's brother Anton during the Blues' Premier League defeat by QPR back in October. Terry has always denied the charges and maintained his innocence.

It was widely expected it would be tough for Hodgson to include both players in his plans given the obvious problems it could create within the camp.

Former England skipper Ferdinand, who has won 81 caps, has featured only sporadically for his country since suffering a knee injury on the eve of the 2010 World Cup which ruled him out of the tournament.

His last appearance for the Three Lions came in the 2-2 draw at home to Switzerland in the European Championship qualifying tournament back in June 2011, when he partnered Terry at the heart of the defence.

The former West Ham and Leeds player has been troubled by back injuries again this term, but has still managed to make 38 appearances for Manchester United as they only missed out on the Premier League title on goal difference to Manchester City.

The news will come as a blow to Ferdinand, who had declared his intention to make himself available this summer, with Hodgson believed to have contacted the Red Devils man earlier on Tuesday.

And it is also believed talented young Spurs defender Walker has been ruled out with a broken toe.

Walker seemed certain to be handed a squad berth after winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award this season.

There are further reports that Stoke City striker Peter Crouch has not made the cut, with Manchester City defender Micah Richards another facing further international disappointment, despite the absence of Walker.

Hodgson has also taken the decision to scrap next week's planned training camp in Spain.

Both former boss Fabio Capello and then Stuart Pearce, who changed the destination, felt it was a good idea to take the England players away for a few days ahead of the friendly with Norway in Oslo on 26th May.

Hodgson has decided his players could do with some additional rest instead, which may also have an impact on the plans to gather as a group for the first time on Monday.
