Lewis Moody: a big Daley Thompson fan, including that iconic moustache
What are your memories of the Olympics?
My first memory is probably of Daley Thompson, back in the 1980s. Maybe it was because of the moustache, but I just thought he was a phenomenal athlete. I was a bit of an athletics kid when I was younger because it covered every discipline, and at the time I was getting into it Daley was at his peak.
I also remember Jonathan Edwards' world record attempt, while Dame Kelly Holmes was probably one of the best memories. When you talk about emotion in sport, that is something you became emotional about the more times you watched it. She hadn't won a gold up to that point and then all of a sudden she had two at one Olympics....the whole situation, everything that goes with it, the achievement, dealing with the adversity and what you have to go through, there are just so many of those great stories with the Olympics. It's the perfect opportunity to bring people together.
What of London 2012?
Firstly, I'm very lucky to get the chance to be carrying the torch, especially the day before (the Games get underway). As an athlete in particular you just want any involvement in the Olympics. I remember four years ago I wondered 'should I give up rugby and see if I can take up something like handball?' so I could make an attempt to get into the Olympics. I probably rightly stuck to my initial career choice.
But I think everyone has that thought. There's a sport in there for all of us. That's why it's also great for the kids - some of them at school might not be into rugby, or cricket or football, but there are all sorts of different disciplines for people to get involved in and get excited about. Look at Tom Daley - how much interest had we in diving before he came along? I even attempted to do it, only I ended up giving myself a rather sore red back. Still, I could get injured opening the presents at Christmas!
Will you be going?
I will be going to the opening ceremony. I've always wanted to go to one, ever since I saw the ceremony in Sydney back in 2000. It's just incredible to see and I'm ridiculously excited about it. It will also earn me some brownie points with the wife...
And what would be your event of choice to compete in?
If I was going to have seriously attempted to become an Olympian as I kid I think athletics would have been my area, and I would have followed on from Daley Thompson because I never excelled in one discipline, but was always somewhere in the top three. If it was now? Definitely handball, so long as I don't have to use my left arm.
What are the prospects for Team GB - plenty of medals?
I think they will do very well. Looking back in history you see most of the host nations tend to do well. You've got the likes of Christine Ohuruogu, Mo Farah and Chris Hoy...there are guys across the board who are peaking at just the right time. It's going to be an exciting Olympics, of that there is no doubt.
