Colin Oates: Missed out on a medal

Great Britain's judo fighter Colin Oates narrowly missed out on a medal when he finished fifth at the Paris Grand Slam.

The under-66kg judoka progressed to his pool final at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, where he had just failed to make the medal fights at the World Championships last summer.

However, in his fourth bout on Saturday, 2012 Olympic hopeful Oates was beaten by Sergey Lim of Kazakhstan so missed out on the chance to fight for a place in the final, which was eventually won by Frenchman David Larose.

Extra-lightweight Ashley McKenzie, the 2010 European Under-23 champion, lost in the second round to Amiran Papinashvili of Georgia.

There was also disappointment for Team GB's women fighters, with Sophie Cox, under-52kg European bronze medalist, suffering a first-round defeat, while Sarah Clark, who claimed gold at the recent British Closed Championships in Sheffield, went out in the second round of the under-57kgs.

On Sunday leading Scottish fighter Euan Burton, ranked in the top 15 for the half-middleweight under-80kg, compete along with heavyweights Karina Bryant, the world number 15, and Sarah Adlington.
