London 2012

Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua really made a name for himself in 2011, having come from virtually nowhere to win a silver medal at the World Championships. He lost to home favourite Magomedrasul Medzhidov by a single controversial point.

He only started boxing aged 18 when he moved to London and his cousin, Ben, suggested he take up the sport to keep himself busy. His passion grew from then on.

It was back in 2010 that he won the senior ABA title in only his 18th fight and hours later turned down £50,000 to turn professional.

Fascinating Facts

  • Anthony is a talented all-around athlete- he ran the 100m in 11sec aged 15.
  • His boxing club in Finchley was also home to Dereck Chisora and Spencer Oliver.

The low point of his career was when he was suspended over allegations that he was caught in possession of herbal cannabis and accepted a minor charge in 2011.

However, with this now behind him, Joshua looks set to be in good shape as he goes into the London Games. With a recent tournament win in Lithuania, he appears to be firmly on track for boxing success in 2012.
