The New York Giants are withdrawing their $60m long-term contract offer to Jason Pierre-Paul after the pass rusher injured his hands in a fireworks accident in South Florida.

The former first-round pick was examined by doctors after being hospitalised for his injuries which were sustained while attempting to light fireworks on July 4.

According to ESPN, Pierre-Paul suffered severe burns on the palm of one hand and the tips of three fingers, and one finger is being tested for nerve damage. He did not lose any fingers, and doctors believe there will be no permanent damage or disfigurement of his hands.

The Giants used their franchise tag on Pierre-Paul to stop him hitting free agency and were hoping to agree a long-term deal before July 15, which is the deadline for franchise players to sign extensions.

However in light of Pierre-Paul’s injuries, the team have decided to withdraw their offer which means the defensive end will play out the 2015 season under the franchise tag for his position, which is worth $14.8m.

Pierre-Paul is a cornerstone defensive player for the Giants and it would be a big blow for the team if he is forced to miss any time. The 26-year-old started all 16 games, posted 12.5 sacks and forced three fumbles last season.
