The New England Patriots have left legendary defensive tackle Vince Wilfork to be a free agent after declining an option on his contract.

He was due to be paid $4m for being on the team's roster had the Pats not made a move before March 9, and it would have cost them nearly $9m against the salary cap.

Wilfork, 33, has always played for the Patriots, who drafted him in 2004.

"I have played for 11 years for the greatest head coach ever!" Wilfork said in a statement on Twitter.

He recorded 516 tackles, 16 sacks and 3 interceptions during his career.

"I will take my time, think things through, take into consideration many things, but mainly my family and see where life goes from there," he said. "But regardless, remember, I will always remain a New Englander, a Patriot forever."

He won two Super Bowls and played in 11 Pro Bowls with the team.
