Robert Griffin III will be the Washington Redskins’ starting quarter-back next season, Jay Gruden confirmed.
Griffin had been benched during the Redskins’ 4-12 season by Gruden and there were suggestions that his return hinged on matters behind the scenes.
He returned to the starting line-up towards the end of the campaign due to Colt McCoy’s injury and now looks set to return to the field for a fourth season in Washington colours.
“We'll go into the season with Robert as our No 1 guy," Gruden told reporters at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday.
"It's up to Robert to continue to grow and mature as a quarterback and as a person. Moving forward we want to see improvement. It's up to us as a staff to get more out of him."
Kirk Cousins is the only other quarter-back that the Redskins have under contract heading into 2015 but Griffin, who the franchise invested in heavily three years ago, will get the nod to rebound from a disappointing year.
