Super Bowl XLIX: Tom Brady desperate to put recent defeats behind him and win fourth championship

Tom Brady says he is looking to erase the pain of his Super Bowl defeat in Arizona seven years ago by beating the Seattle Seahawks at the same venue on Sunday.

The New England Patriots were upset 17-14 by the New York Giants at the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2008 – Brady’s first Super Bowl defeat.

“I wish that game would have ended differently,” he said. “But we didn't make enough plays that day.

“It's good to be back here and have the opportunity to play in this game. But it's not about where you play, it’s how you play.

"If we want to win this game we've got to go play really well, against a great team.”

The Patriots face the defending champions, the Seahawks, and hope to prevent them from being the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Patriots last did it 10 years ago.

Brady, now 37, won three Super Bowls in his first four years as a starter and admits he now appreciates just how difficult it is to return to the summit.

Challenging

“I was so young and I didn't understand what this was all about and how challenging this is," he said. "Everything happened so fast at such an early part of my career and over the years since we've had some tough losses.

“Obviously we made it [back to the Super Bowl] in 2007 and 2011, those were challenging games, they came down to the wire and we lost.”

The loss in 2011 was also to the Giants and meant Brady would have to wait longer still in his search for a fourth championship ring, which would bring him level with Hall-of-Fame quarterback and childhood idol Joe Montana

“I don't think those things discouraged me at all,” added Brady. “They just re-emphasised how hard it is to get to this point and how challenging it is to win this game.

“I have such an appreciation for it now. That's why I'm hoping we can finally finish it off with a great win on Sunday. It would mean an awful lot.”
