Five Fave Super Bowls - XLII: New York Giants 17-14 New England Patriots

Take a trip down memory lane with as we select another one of our five favourite Super Bowls from years gone by.

Live NFL - Super Bowl XLIX

The Giants were never expected to stop the Patriots, a well-oiled machine that had gone through the season unbeaten and was looking for the perfect 19-0 record.

As much as the crowd seemed to like Eli Manning, no one believed he could win the game. But he did. The Giants defence suffocated the Patriots’ explosive offense, limiting them to just 14 points, but Manning wasn’t doing a lot either.

After Randy Moss’ touchdown catch, the Pats led 14-10 with only 2 minutes 42 seconds left on the clock, before the game saw one of the greatest catches of all time.

Manning, scrambling away from heavy pressure, threw the ball up to David Tyree, who caught it on his helmet. It was probably the first time a whole press box could be heard screaming.

A few throws later, Plaxico Burress caught the ball in the end zone to give the Giants the lead, with Tom Brady unable to inspire another Super Bowl comeback with only 30 seconds left.

A forlorn-looking Patriots fan after the game had a sign that said ‘Patriots! 19-0!’ and must have wondered what had happened!
