Wise Dan: On the comeback trail after suffering from colic
Connections of Wise Dan are confident of a bold show in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga on Saturday night.
The two-time Breeders' Cup Mile hero is having his first public outing since suffering from a bout of colic after winning at Churchill Downs back in May and is a red-hot favourite with Sky Bet to make a successful reappearance under John Velazquez.
Trainer Charles LoPresti reports the seven-year-old to be back to full health, but admits to having more than half an eye on his charge's main targets - Keeneland's Shadwell Turf Mile, in which he was narrowly defeat last term, and a return to the Breeders' Cup.
LoPresti told the National Thoroughbred Racing Association earlier in the week: "That (the weight Wise Dan must concede) is the one thing I am concerned about.
"I know he did it last year but this is a little bit different scenario. But he's very good right now, his last three works have indicated that."
LoPresti said it was important to get Wise Dan back racing but won't be overly concerned if he is beaten first time out.
"I'm not going to jump off the roof if he gets beat half a length or a length, something like that," LoPresti told Saratoga's publicity department.
"He's been beaten before, so that doesn't worry me. If he's lucky enough to win, fine, but if it sets him up for the Shadwell and the Breeders' Cup, I'm OK with that, too."
Sky Bet are also betting on the two Grade 1 events later on the Saratoga card, the Forego Stakes and the Woodward Stakes.
