Mainz sink sorry Dortmund

Mainz moved up to third in the Bundesliga on Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, who were brought crashing back down to earth after their Champions League win over Arsenal.

Shinji Okazaki gave Kasper Hjulmand's men the lead midway through the second half and Ciro Immobile missed a penalty, conceded by Okazaki, before Matthias Ginter put through his own goal to complete Mainz's victory.

Dortmund were a shadow of the side who beat the Gunners so impressively on Tuesday, and their second defeat of the season was the result as Mainz moved above them into a group of four teams on eight points.

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp left Immobile and Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of his starting XI, bringing Adrian Ramos back in, and it was the Colombian who wasted their best chances.

The first came in the 14th minute when Shinji Kagawa laid the ball off for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his cross was headed just wide of the target by Ramos.

Jonas Hofmann, who is on loan at Mainz from Dortmund this season, had Mainz's first effort on target but Roman Weidenfeller pushed the shot away.

Five minutes before the break, Dortmund then came the closest yet to breaking the deadlock with Lukasz Piszczek's low cross from the right turned onto the outside of the near post by Ramos.

The former Hertha Berlin forward then had a goalbound shot blocked by Junior Diaz, who made another telling intervention to turn Aubameyang's deflected effort away from the goal line.

It was then time for Jairo to alter the course of the game, turning inside Sokratis Papastathopoulos before squaring for Okazaki, who scored his fourth goal of the season from close range.

Okazaki went from hero to villain four minutes later when he blocked Immobile's shot with his arm, with the referee judging he had done so intentionally.

The Italian forward, who opened his Dortmund account in midweek, stepped up to the spot with regular penalty taker Mkhitaryan still on the bench but his shot was saved by Loris Karius, who got down well to his right.

After that let-off, Jairo was put through on goal and while his choice of squaring the ball for Okazaki looked to have been the wrong one with only Weidenfeller to beat, it turned out to be just right as Ginter slid in to turn the ball into his own goal.

Dortmund tried to find a way back into the game, but the closest they managed was when Mkhitaryan's shot was deflected against the post in the last minute.
