Andy Turner finished third in his final race as he wound down his athletics career at the Great CityGames in Newcastle.
The 33-year-old, who won gold in the 110 metres hurdles at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in 2010, recorded a time of 13.78 seconds in finishing behind 2008 Olympic champion Dayron Robles.
"I can't describe the emotions I felt leading up to that race," Turner said.
"I thought I'd be fine but they played the music and montages and it got me. I'm struggling for words right now. I've taken more out of my career than I could have imagined."
The event saw plenty of British success with Christine Ohuruogu victorious in a rare race run over 500 metres.
Ohuruogu won an all-domestic race in 67.46 seconds ahead of European 800 metres silver medallist Lynsey Sharp and 400 metres hurdles winner Eilidh Child.
Tiffany Porter put up one of the day's best performances in the 100 metres hurdles, winning in 12.79 seconds from American rivals Brianna Rollins, Dawn Harper-Nelson and Jasmin Stowers.
Richard Kilty edged out Michael Rodgers to win the 150 metres event with another British runner, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey back in third - the women's race over the same distance was won by Asha Philip.
And Greg Rutherford came out on top in the long jump, his best leap of 7.92 metres proving more than enough for victory.
Laura Muir won the women's BUPA Great North Mile in a time of 4:34.84, while the men's race was won by Germany's Homiyu Tesfaye (4:00.92).
Jonnie Peacock had to settle for second in the men's T44 100m as American Richard Browne took the title, and American Jennifer Suhr won the women's pole vault with a jump of 4.52m.
