Costa Rica coach Jorge Pinto was trying not to get carried away following his team’s shock 3-1 win over Uruguay in Group D.

Pinto’s side had been the rank outsiders to progress to the World Cup last 16 from the group and fell behind to an Edinson Cavani penalty.

However, goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marcos Urena earned Costa Rica the points against the 2010 semi-finalists.

Costa Rica next face Italy, who beat England in their opening match on Saturday, and Pinto was delighted with the composure shown by his players.

"It's a historic victory to have won against a great team, a tough team that is not easy to beat," he said.

"We are happy and I want to congratulate the team for the attitude they showed.

"The players kept their heads after Uruguay scored. They were composed, stuck to their game and played with a lot of heart.

"It's an important win for us and it gives us hope, though we haven't won anything yet."

Campbell, who spent last season on loan at Olympiakos from Arsenal, believes Costa Rica have the potential to reach the knockout stages.

"The whole team was the star, the whole team played well," said Campbell.
"Right from the start we knew we could win. We have a very strong mentality and even when we were losing our heads didn't drop.
"We've got two more games and we hope to get good results to see us into the last 16.”
