Serena Williams: Progressed in Beijing

Top seed Serena Williams and her sister Venus progressed to the third round of the China Open on Tuesday, but fellow seeds Agnieszka Radwanska, Eugenie Bouchard and Flavia Pennetta crashed out.

Williams saw off Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 6-3 in a much easier match than her first round clash, where she had trailed 5-0 in the first set to Silvia Soler-Espinosa before winning through.

The American will next face Czech 13th seed Lucie Safarova, who won 6-3 6-3 against German qualifier Mona Barthel.

Williams’ sister Venus, the 16th seed in Beijing, also progressed with a 6-4 6-3 win over France’s Caroline Garcia, while second seed Simona Halep beat Lin Zhu 7-5 6-4 and fourth seed Maria Sharapova easily defeated Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2.

Sabine Lisicki caused a shock, defeating Wimbledon finalist and eighth seed Bouchard 6-2 6-4, while 14th seed Pennetta went down 6-1 3-6 6-2 to Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in the only second round tie to go to three sets.

Fifth seed Radwanska was also dumped out, losing 6-4 6-4 to Italian Roberta Vinci, whose reward is a clash with 12th seed Ekaterina Makarova, who defeated qualifier Polona Hercog 7-5 6-0.

Seventh seed Angelique Kerber progressed 6-3 6-1 against Zarina Diyas, while fellow seeds Ana Ivanovic and Andrea Petkovic  won through against Romina Oprandi and Madison Keys respectively.

Unseeded Svetlana Kuznetsova set up a third round clash with Kerber with a 6-3 6-1 win over Japan’s Kurumi Nara.
