American teenager Lexi Thompson became the second youngest woman to win a major after she clinched the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The 19-year-old had gone into the final round with the share of the lead, however a bogey-free round of 68 saw her finish clear of Michelle Wie.

Only Morgan Pressel has won a major at a younger age, with Thompson holding her nerve to claim a three-shot victory.

"I worked my life to win a major," Thompson said. “This was my main goal.

"Overall it was a pretty solid week. This tournament is special to me."

Wie, whose last career title came at the 2010 Canadian Open, was left to rue three bogeys in the final round.

The 24-year-old had to settle for 11-under for the tournament, with Wie admitting she had tried too hard to force things.

"I couldn't get anything going," she said. "I got to a point where I just tried too hard. I tried to make birdies and forced everything. I wanted to make those putts so badly I just forced it."

England’s Charley Hull had forced her way into contention after three rounds however her challenge fell away over the final 18 holes.

The Solheim Cup star eventually finished 10 shots off the pace after carding a four-over 76.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew also endured a disappointing finish to finish on two-under overall alongside the likes of Pressel and Karrie Webb.
