Fallon happy at Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe's latest signing Rory Fallon boosted his chances of earning a longer-term deal at the club by scoring on debut at Oldham.

The 33-year-old New Zealand international signed a short-term contract last week and struck his first goal for the Iron after being thrown straight into the starting line-up in the 3-2 weekend defeat at Boundary Park. "I was surprised, but football is a funny game which can throw some curve-balls at you," Fallon said after his debut. "With me, I just keep working and persevering and hopefully things go right for you. "It's just great to be involved, and great to be at Scunthorpe. "Russ gave me an opportunity to come and train, and that's all it was at the start. "I've trained well, he's chucked me in, and I've nicked a goal. Hopefully I can get more games, and get more goals for the club. "It's a great start for me to get that first goal, but it would have been great to get at least a point." The former Barnsley, Swindon, Swansea and Plymouth forward has been drafted in to help ease an ongoing injury crisis at Glanford Park. Defender Niall Canavan has learned his shoulder injury sustained against Blackburn in August will keep him out for three months, while goalkeeper Sam Slocombe (shoulder), midfielder David Syers, defenders David Mirfin and Miles Addison, plus striker Deon Burton (all knee) remain sidelined long-term. The absence of defender Eddie Nolan at Oldham meant boss Russ Wilcox's line-up did not include one player who featured in Scunthorpe's win against Mansfield on the opening day of last season.
