Away win satisfies Ainsworth

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth lauded his side for going away to Plymouth and securing a 1-0 League Two win.

Visiting skipper Paul Hayes headed in the game's only goal from a 36th-minute corner, nodding in Aaron Pierre's flick-on from close range. Argyle's top scorer Reuben Reid had forced Wycombe keeper Matt Ingram to save well and the keeper easily dealt with Tyler Harvey's follow-up too. Ingram then made a last-minute, stoppage-time save on the line to keep out a header from Plymouth skipper Curtis Nelson. Ainsworth said: "It's a fantastic three points, away at Plymouth Argyle, because it's a tough place to come and win. "There was not much in the game - we limited Plymouth's chances on our goal and we have taken our chance at the corner. "Maybe on the break we might have troubled them again but they didn't really get that many chances to trouble us - maybe one shot in the first half from Reuben Reid and the follow-up, both saved by Matt Ingram. "In the second half there were a couple of near misses from them but I was really pleased with the way we defended, saw the game out and managed the game. "It's a great group of lads who are working really hard for each other and the honesty and togetherness is really coming up trumps at the moment. "It's a fantastic three points away at Plymouth Argyle, it's a tough place to come. It's a very big pitch, expansive and they do try and play some good stuff. "I changed the shape in the second half just to tighten things up for us and I thought the boys adapted to that really well. "It was a great result for us, feet on the ground and we are closer to our survival total and that's how I am looking at it." Plymouth boss John Sheridan lamented a bad day at the office. He admitted: "It was very frustrating. It was not good enough. I thought we started okay and created some decent opportunities in the first half, but they get the goal, which is again from a set play. It's poor, poor defending, and it is poor how it ended up in the net. "I am not making excuses. I will take the criticism because it was not a good enough performance. "I will take it on the chin, whatever criticism I get. We have got to be better as a group. I can pick a team - everyone can pick a team, and think so and so should be playing - but I picked a team that hopefully was going to win us the game. "I do not think we gave in, in any way but it was just a case of game know-how, for players in the second division - once you go a goal down, knowing what to do next. "I would like one or two players to look at themselves as well because I do not think we performed as a team with the fighting spirit that I think we have got. We did not show it. I am not making excuses - we were not good enough to win the game."
