Simon Grayson: Delighted with striker commitment
Preston boss Simon Grayson has revealed his delight at striker Joe Garner signing a new two-year deal with the Lilywhites.
Last season's top scorer with 24 goals has three to his credit already this campaign and despite rumours linking him with a move away from Deepdale, Grayson insisted there was never any doubt the 26-year-old would put pen to paper on a new contract.
"It was fantastic that we agreed a deal with him," said the Preston manager. "There was a lot of speculation about him going, but it has never been in question really.
"We have reiterated many times that he was never going to leave unless we got a ridiculous offer and obviously we wanted to tie him down to a longer-term contract, which has now been agreed and he's signed.
"We've had bids for him turned down as they were nowhere near our valuation we put on him. There was always going to be interest in somebody who scored 20-odd goals last season - there were enquiries, but no one got close to matching our valuation. The owner doesn't need the money, so his future was never in doubt unless it was a mega offer."
Grayson also reserved praise for Chris Humphrey, whose terrific strike looked to have claimed all three points for North End away at Doncaster on Tuesday night, until sub Nathan Tyson fired home a dramatic injury-time equaliser for Rovers.
"He will be disappointed that his goal, which was worthy of winning any match, hasn't got us the points," said Grayson.
"We've believed in his ability and his work-rate and attitude has never been in question. He's had up and down games, which all wingers do, and we've said that many times, But he did what he needed to do, he got a fantastic goal and I'm really pleased with him."
