Notts County have completed the signing of former defender Mike Edwards on a short-term contract.

Edwards, who played for the club for eight years prior to his departure in the summer of 2012, has returned to Meadow Lane as a player-coach and could be involved in the Magpies' League One fixture at home to Colchester on Tuesday night. The 34-year-old has been training with Shaun Derry's squad in recent weeks and even turned out in a pre-season friendly at Carlton Town last month. He will primarily take up the role of strength and conditioning coach, replacing Lee Taylor who is set to leave the club this week to pursue a new opportunity. Edwards has made over 500 first-team appearances in his career, with spells at Hull, Colchester, Grimsby and Carlisle as well as his eight-year stint with the Magpies.
