Dickov praise for McCombe

Paul Dickov has praised Jamie McCombe after making his Doncaster return after more than a year on the sidelines through injury.

The defender was handed his first Doncaster start since April 2013 in Tuesday night's 1-0 Capital Cup win at York after finally overcoming back problems that have been plaguing him. The 31-year-old centre-half played less than five minutes of football all last season, appearing as a late substitute twice in April, but Rovers manager Dickov decided to name him in the starting XI rather than arrange a practice match later in the week and was pleased with his performance. "We're all absolutely delighted for him," said Dickov. "Jamie did a little bit of light training on Friday and then on Monday, but I don't think he was expecting to play. I was going to try and arrange a game for him this week to get him some minutes under his belt, but I made my decision that there was already a game he could play in. "We threw him in at the deep end a little, but I thought he was magnificent. He's such a good lad, a top, top pro. "I spoke to him on Monday about it and I think he thought I was off my head, which was probably right. Then again, if we were going to arrange a game and give him 90 minutes then he may as well have played at York." After signing six players in the summer, Dickov admitted he was not looking to bring anyone else in to the Keepmoat Stadium before the transfer window closes at the end of August. "For the time being, our business is finished," admitted the Scot, "and I'm not looking at loan deals either."
