Sam Morsy: In a rich vein of form
Chesterfield coach Eric Nixon hopes Sam Morsy can carry his recent goalscoring form into the forthcoming League One campaign.
Morsy netted for the fourth time in pre-season as the Spireites defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at the Proact Stadium on Wednesday night, adding to his double against Leeds four days previously and another strike at Matlock this summer.
The 22-year-old built a reputation as a combative, but ball-playing, midfielder during his maiden season at Chesterfield and Nixon admitted that adding goals to his game is something the coaching staff have been working on.
"He's in a rich vein of form at the moment but the management have tried to add that to his game and get him to take more responsibility further up the pitch," goalkeeping coach Nixon said.
"The manager identified nice and early that Samy has very good quality on the ball so the plan has been to try to use that further up in the final third where he can hurt teams by either creating a chance for someone else or, as he's shown recently, taking a chance himself.
"It's something we've been working on and spreading the goals about was something, as a club, we did very well and very successfully last season so hopefully we can continue to do that.
"This will be Samy's second season here and we want him to push on, and contributing goals will hopefully be part of that."
