Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon is relishing the prospect of a selection headache after signing forward Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro.

Akpa Akpro has been brought in to rival James Collins and Scott Vernon for a place as Shrewsbury make their return to League Two.

He told the club's official website: "It's the type of problems you want as a manager. You can never have too many good players and I'm delighted with the standard of the trialists.

"We want to create that competitive edge that's going to be needed, not just to win games but to get into our first team.

"I'm very clear about the type of players I want to play within the group. We want to give the people of Shrewsbury something to be excited about."

Recruiting the former Tranmere player has pleased Mellon, as his squad begins to take shape ahead of a busy pre-season. He added: "I'm delighted to get him on board after some fantastic work by Matt Williams (chief executive) and the chairman."

"He's the type of striker I was looking for to compliment the terrific players who we already have.

"He's athletic, can play in a number of positions across the front line and is a player I've always felt would fit into the way I want to do things here.

"He'll catch up with the pre-season training because he's starting the programme which the rest of the lads have done, but he's a fit lad anyway. He'll compliment Collins and Vernon really well."
