Rio Haryanto mastered the treacherous conditions to claim his first GP2 pole position ahead of Saturday's feature race at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Carlin driver was the man to beat throughout the rain-affected session, seeming to have more confidence than his rivals to push his car early on.
Britain's James Calado was the closest to the Indonesian, lapping a tenth of a second slower, just ahead of Lotus team-mate Esteban Gutierrez.
The start of the session was delayed whilst yet another rain shower passed over the Belgian circuit and when the green light did finally come on, it was Haryanto who was first out to brave the conditions.
Behind the top three were iSport team-mates Marcus Ericsson and Jolyon Palmer and Davide Valsecchi (DAMS).
Championship leader Luis Razia had a nightmare session for Arden and starts 19th, having lapped some three seconds slower than the pole sitter.
Haryanto's team-mate, british driver Max Chilton, will start 13th.
