Johnny Cecotto gamble's of starting on slick tyres paid off as he took victory in the GP2 feature in mixed conditions at Hockenheim.

After heavy rain during the preceding Formula One qualifying, most of the field opted to start on wet tyres, but, as a dry line quickly appeared, most struggled to make them last until the pit window opened on lap six.

As everyone dived into a manic pit-lane, the Addax driver stayed out along with Stephane Richelmi, who was the only other man to start on the dry tyres. The stops gave the pair a 28-second advantage over the chasing pack.

Cecotto streaked a way at the front, opening up a 10-second gap over Richelmi, who pitted on lap 23 and emerged behind DAMS driver Felipe Nasr.

A lap later the Addax driver was in, comfortably rejoining in the lead ahead of Fabio Leimer, as he counted down the laps to the chequered flag.

Richelmi found a way past Nasr to complete the podium, whilst pole-sitter Giedo van der Garde struggled home in fifth.

Behind them Marcus Ericsson and Esteban Guitierrez battled over ninth on the final lap, and both ran wide at the hairpin, allowing series returnee Tom Dillmann to dispatch both.

Luiz Razia stretched out his lead in the championship to 171 points over Davide Valsecchi on 159, with Gutierrez on 123 points ahead of van der Garde (107), James Calado (99), Max Chilton (95), Leimer (87) and Cecotto (76).
