Sky Academy Sports Scholarships: Lucy Garner blogs on her Commonwealth Games experience

The Commonwealth Games were a great experience and huge learning curve for me. I arrived six days before my race and was welcomed by all the friendly staff and volunteers who make the Games a success.

It was great to be in the village with all the other athletes and it was really nice to bump into some of my fellow Sky Scholars as well and see them in their race environment.

The morning of the race came and I was extremely excited to be on the bike racing after having nearly a week of training on the Glasgow roads. Team England had a good plan and it couldn’t have worked out better in the race. We wanted the win for Lizzie Armitstead and not only did we get that but Emma Pooley also took second place.

We worked so well as a team and every girl did what they could to help Lizzie.

After the race we had enough time to get ready for the closing ceremony, which was amazing! I have never experienced anything like that before and the atmosphere was incredible.

Live music, great athletes and amazing supporters couldn’t have made for a better closing ceremony. I will never forget this Games and I’m determined more than ever to be there for the next one!
