Oscar Pistorius trial: Paralympian to learn fate as judge prepares to rule on remaining charges

Oscar Pistorius will find out today whether he is guilty of culpable homicide over the death of his girlfriend.

The South African Paralympian was cleared of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on Thursday, when Judge Thokozile Masipa delivered part of her verdict at a court in Pretoria.

Pistorius was found not guilty of both premeditated and second-degree murder in shooting Ms Steenkamp dead on Valentine's Day last year.

The 27-year-old admits the killing but has always argued he acted in the belief an intruder was in his house, and the judge told the court there were "not enough facts" to support the prosecution case that he had intended to kill Ms Steenkamp.

Judge Masipa adjourned proceedings until today, when she will rule on the culpable homicide charge - the South African equivalent of manslaughter - which carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence.

Pistorius was charged with one count of murder, two of illegally discharging a firearm - charges unrelated to Ms Steenkamp's death - and one of illegally possessing ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The sprinter, his head down and shoulders shaking, was visibly distressed and wept in court on Thursday as the judge recounted the events of February last year.

The prosecution had suggested Pistorius stormed down his bedroom corridor after his frightened girlfriend in a jealous rage and deliberately shot her through the toilet door.

It had pushed for a verdict of premeditated murder which carried a sentence of 25 years in prison.

The double amputee sprinter has insisted he was terrified and felt excessively vulnerable due to his disability and shot Ms Steenkamp in a tragic accident, believing her to be an intruder.

South Africa has no jury system so Judge Masipa is deciding on the verdicts with the help of two assessors.
