Commonwealth Games: England's Ben Proud storms to victory in 50m butterfly
Last Updated: 26/07/14 3:50pm
Ben Proud ended England's wait for their first gold medal in the Glasgow 2014 pool when he triumphed in the 50m butterfly final.
The 19-year-old Londoner was up against former Olympic and world champion Roland Schoeman but a new Commonwealth Games record time of 22.93 seconds earned him victory by eight hundreths from Schoeman.
Another South African, Chad Le Clos, took bronze on the second night of swimming action at the Tollcross Centre.
England added another gold later in the evening when Chris Walker-Hebborn won the 100m backstroke in a Game recod of 53.12s.
Walker-Hebborn held off Australian Mitch Larkin, while his team-mate Liam Tancock and another Australian, Josh Beaver, had to share the bronze after both finished on 53.75s
'For freedom'
Daniel Wallace demonstrated his Braveheart spirit as he roared to gold in the 400 metres individual medley.
The 21-year-old from Edinburgh bellowed 'for freedom!' after touching home to claim Scotland's third pool gold of Glasgow 2014, following on from Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch on day one.
It was a moment of redemption for the University of Florida student, who feared at one point this year that he would be axed from Team Scotland after he was arrested in the US for urinating on a police car and suspended by his American swim team.
He said: "I just yelled at the top of my lungs for freedom because being here, the home crowd has really brought out he Braveheart and Scot inside of me and I just soaked up the moment."
However, there was more pain for Glasgow 2014 poster boy Michael Jamieson as he crashed out of the Games after losing to Murdoch for the fourth time in just 48 hours.
Having been beaten in both the heats and the final of his favourite 200m breaststroke event, he sank again in the 100m semi-final after finishing behind Murdoch in the heats too.
He slumped to fifth in his semi with a time of 1:02.04, to leave him 11th overall.
Murdoch's victory in the first semi-final saw him qualify second behind England's Adam Peaty, fastest overall with a time of 59.16s.
Scott bronze
In the women's 50m butterfly, Scotland's Corrie Scott claimed bronze. Twelfth four years ago in Dehli, the 20-year-old from Bellshill claimed a podium place with a time of 30.75 secs as Australia's Leiston Pickett beat Alia Atkinson of Jamaica to the gold.
There was disappointment for another home favourite as Robbie Renwick saw his 200m freestyle title slip from his grasp.
The 26-year-old from Glasgow failed to produce the magic that won him gold in Delhi in 2010 as he trailed home in sixth place.
Instead, it was Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes who produced a breathtaking finish to claim his second Commonwealth title.
The 23-year-old Gold Coast swimmer was left in the wake of compatriot Cameron McEvoy for the first three lengths but stormed past the double World Youth Champion in the final 50m to snatch victory.
Callum Jarvis of Wales just edged out David McKeon to take bronze and prevent an Australian clean sweep of the medals.
Canadian Katerine Savard's new Games record of 57.40 seconds was all that denied Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of England in the women's 100m butterfly final, while her countrymen Adam Brown, James Disney-May, Adam Barrett and Proud could only come in third as they lost out to Australia and South Africa in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
