Valentino Rossi became the first rider in MotoGP history to reach 5000 career points after claiming his first win in 15 months at San Marino on Sunday.

Jorge Lorenzo finished behind the 35-year-old to make it a Yamaha one-two with Honda's Dani Pedrosa completing the podium with a third-place finish.

Championship leader Marc Marquez, who has won 11 of this year’s 13 races, could only muster a 15th-place finish after falling on Lap 10 while in pursuit of Rossi.

Andrea Dovizioso edged Pramac’s Andrea Iannone for fourth while Tech3 rookie Pol Espargaro finished sixth, ahead of his British team-mate Bradley Smith.

Smith's fellow Briton Cal Crutchlow finished ninth.

The Misano circuit is located near Rossi's home town of Tavullia and it was the nine-time world champion's first victory on Italian soil since his win on that track in 2009.

"It's a really great win and with Marquez in such amazing form it's not like it happens often," said Rossi who was securing his first win of the season but the 107th of his career.

"It was the right moment and I took advantage of it, thanks to a Yamaha which was better than the Honda.

"Winning was the main aim of the season and I did. I knew I could do it and I continued to push and believe in it always, regardless of everything.

"I was near enough often, I kept telling myself that it would happen one day that Marquez wouldn't be at 100% and I had to be ready."

Pedrosa has closed the gap in the standings slightly to 74 points behind Marquez, with Rossi a point further back in third.

The victory came 18 years and 27 days after Rossi's first career win and is a new record.

Loris Capirossi was the previous longest winning driver, with a gap of 17 years and 49 days between his first and last victories.

Meanwhile, Tito Rabat extended his lead in the race for the Moto2 World Championship to 22 points with victory over team-mate Mika Kallio, with Johann Zarco finishing third.

Alex Rins won the Moto3 race ahead of Alex Marquez and third-placed Jack Miller.
