MotorGP: Circuit of Wales signs deal to stage British race

MotoGP

The Circuit of Wales is to replace Silverstone as host of the British MotoGP.

A historic five-year deal has been agreed by the circuit, with the option of a five-year extension.

The circuit is due to be built near Ebbw Vale with the Welsh track set to host the race from 2016.

Michael Carrick, chief executive of the Circuit of Wales, said in a statement: "Our agreement with Dorna (rights holders) is a significant landmark in the development of the Circuit of Wales.

"MotoGP is the pinnacle of global motorcycle racing and expectations within the series and of its millions of fans worldwide are for a truly world class event at iconic and state-of-the art venues.

"We look forward to meeting those expectations when we welcome MotoGP to Wales from 2016 and we are now working closely with Dorna and the FIM, MotoGP's governing body, with regard to the 2015 British round of the World Championship."

Since the Isle of Man stopped hosting Britain’s world championship round in 1976, the only courses to have staged the event are Donington and Silverstone.

If the £280m Circuit of Wales proves a success, Donington and Silverstone may have to wait until 2024 to have the opportunity to host the grand prix once more.
