Sky Sports have announced that former World Champion Damon Hill has joined their team to cover the 2012 season on their dedicated F1 channel, Sky Sports F1 HD.

In an entirely-unpredicted announcement that also serves to prove that secrets can be kept in F1, the broadcasters have revealed that Hill, who raced in F1 between 1992 and 1999, has been hired to provide expert analysis for the soon-to-launch station.

Joining a team of pundits that already includes Martin Brundle and Anthony Davidson in addition to commentator David Croft and pit-lane reporters Ted Kravitz and Natalie Pinkham, Hill will be on air for ten - Australia, Bahrain, Monaco, Britain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, India, USA and Brazil - of the scheduled twenty grands prix.

Welcoming him to the channel, which will broadcast every session of every grand prix in 2012, Executive Producer Martin Turner enthused: "Damon Hill is a British motor racing legend and has incredible Formula 1 knowledge and insight. He will provide our viewers with not just a driver's eye view, but also that of a world champion. There aren't many around and I'm delighted we'll have Damon with us during the season."

Hill himself revealed that the lure of being part of a channel dedicated to F1 had proved impossible to resist: "The plans Sky Sports have for Formula 1 are very impressive, particularly the dedicated Formula 1 channel and I couldn't resist becoming involved. There are so many reasons to be excited about the new season and I can't wait to get started."

The channel will launch in early March, with exclusive live coverage of the Australian GP beginning on March 16.
