Exeter Chiefs have signed Bristol utility player Adam Hughes on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old Welshman, who can play centre, wing or full-back, scored a try in his final game for the West Country club in Wednesday's play-off defeat to London Welsh.

Hughes, who joined Bristol from Newport-Gwent Dragons earlier this season, said: "This is a great move for me and one I am very much looking forward to.

"I came down in January, I had a good look around the place and had a good chat with the coaches after which it didn’t take very long for me to make up my mind.

“The Chiefs have done really well ever since they got into the Premiership and this year they obviously won a trophy as well, so it's clear they are a club that are on the up. Also I’ve also spoken to a few people about the club itself and all I’ve heard is good things, so it will be good to get down there and be part of it all."

Exeter head coach Rob Baxter was delighted to complete the signing after tracking Hughes' progress for a number of years.

"We had a look at him about three years ago just before he re-signed with the Dragons. He was player-of-the-year that year, so we looked to sign him and have kept tabs on him ever since.

"I know he has had less involvement in the Dragons first team and he's moved to Bristol for game time, but there are reasons for it - he has had a couple of injuries and there has been a change of coaches at Newport.

"When we met him and he did his physical testing, everything showed that he was definitely worth us having another look at. He is one of those guys who has the physical potential to be very good and just needs to get some decent rugby under his belt and kick-start his career."
