Nasser Al-Attiyah: Qatari driver led the way on stage eight of Dakar Rally
Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah claimed victory on stage eight of the Dakar Rally in his Mini as the race crossed through the Andes from Bolivia into Chile.
Stephane Peterhansel was second and Carlos Sainz, winner of stages four and seven, took third in the 302-kilometre timed run from the Bolivian town of Uyuni to Calama.
Spanish driver Nani Roma was sixth and retains a 24-minute advantage over 11-time race winner Peterhansel in the overall standings, with South African Giniel De Villiers in third.
Al-Attiyah, who won the race in 2011, is in fifth overall, one hour and five minutes adrift.
In the motorbike section Frenchman Cyril Despres emerged the stage winner.
Yamaha rider Despres is still way off the pace in the overall standings, almost two-and-a-half hours behind Spain's Marc Coma.
Stage nine on Tuesday sees the participants cover 150km across Chile's Atacama desert with a finish in Iquique.
