Nasser Al-Attiyah has been forced to pull out of this year's Dakar Rally due to a mechanical failure.

The 42-year-old, along with co-driver Lucas Cruz, had been pushing for the overall lead in the race until repeated break-downs, caused by a broken water pump, on the 851km stage nine between Tucuman and Cordoba in Argentina forced them to abandon.

At the start of the ninth stage, Qatari Al-Attiyah was second in the overall classification, just over three minutes behind 11-time Dakar winner, Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel.

Al-Attiyah, who won the race in 2011 and was second in 2010, was taking part in a buggy developed by Red Bull Motorsport.

The Red Bull Rally Team's other entry, driven by Spain's Carlos Sainz, was also forced to withdraw from the race because of mechanical problems on the sixth stage.
