Ford has confirmed it is withdrawing works support from the world rally championship from next season.

"Ford will withdraw from @OfficialWRC as title sponsor after 2012. #FordWRC thanks its fans, drivers and many partners for their support," a Ford tweet read.

Ford cars - such as that driven by Jari-Matti Latvala who is third in this year's championship - could however still take part next season.

Talks are ongoing about the prospect of the likes of Latvala racing without Ford's works support.

The M-Sport organisation has run Ford's factory outfit since 1997, winning the manufacturers' championships in 2006 and 2007.

Ford's decision is the latest blow for the championship and it follows hot on the heels of BMW's decision to withdraw support for the Mini works team.
